0DTE means zero days to expiry. Same-day options. On indexes they print every weekday now. On a GEX chart they can look like the whole market. They aren’t. They’re the loudest magnet *today*, with a half-life that ends at the close.
Gamma is large when an option is near the money and near expiry. 0DTE is both. A modest pile of same-day contracts can out-shove a fat monthly pile that sits farther from spot. That’s why GEX and open interest diverge on 0DTE days: fewer tickets, more shove per tick.
If you leave every expiry on, that same-day pile drags the call wall, the put wall, the gamma flip, ABS GEX, all of it. Like a magnet that dies at 4 p.m. Eastern. Tomorrow’s chart is a different animal. Same labels. Different meat.
Our Gamma tab lets you pick dates on purpose. GEX, OI, and the seven levels are the sum of the dates you selected. This page is why that dropdown is not a decoration.
If you want the live picture, open Gamma. Toggle the dates. Watch the walls move. That’s the lesson. Not a trade.
What 0DTE gamma actually does
Same-day options have almost no time left. Delta jumps when spot jumps. Dealers who are short that strip have to chase. In the usual story that’s violent negative or positive gamma sitting right on top of the market — often a skyscraper on one or two strikes.
That skyscraper can pin. It can also snap. Pinning chatter at 11 a.m. on 0DTE is just “the magnet is here right now.” By 3:50 p.m. the magnet is a different strike or it’s gone. Treating a 0DTE call wall like a weekly resistance line is how you get confused every morning.
0DTE is not “retail lottery tickets” as a personality. Some of it is hedges. Some of it is spreads. Some of it is noise. The chart counts listed open interest. It does not interview the flow. Don’t write a morality play on top of a bar.
Indexes (SPY, SPX, QQQ) are where 0DTE changed the texture of the day. Single names may not even have a same-day listed strip. If they do, the pile can be tiny and still look loud on a GEX scale that isn’t an index. Read SPY and NVDA like different animals. We still show both.
A 0DTE put wall under the market on an index after a dip is often just where the day’s protection sat down. It can look like support until it is a hole. A 0DTE call wall overhead can look like a ceiling until a squeeze eats it and the hedge that was selling rips is no longer there. Same caveats as the walls article, with a shorter fuse.
Monthlies are a different clock
A monthly (or a weekly that’s still a few days out) has less gamma per contract near the same spot, usually, and more time for the pile to still exist tomorrow. The cluster is often wider. The decay is slower. That’s the right-hand panel on the schematic.
Monthlies still move. They roll. They get closed. They are not “real” and 0DTE “fake.” They’re different questions. If you care about next week’s neighborhood, don’t let today-only options answer. If you care about the next two hours, don’t let next month’s OI pretend it’s a magnet.
Expiry week for a monthly is a third animal: the monthly starts acting like short-dated gamma as Friday approaches. The filter still helps. Isolate that Friday. Then add 0DTE if you want the same-day overlay. Then take it off. The difference is the point.
Quarterlies, leaps, far-dated hedges — they can park huge OI with sleepy gamma. Parking lots. Useful to know they exist. Useless as a same-day call wall. GEX vs open interest is that split. The expiry filter is how you stop mixing the parking lot into the magnet.
“All expiries” is a smoothie
The friendly default is every date checked. That’s a smoothie. 0DTE orange, weekly banana, monthly dairy. You can drink it. You should know what’s in the glass.
A smoothie call wall can be a 0DTE strike that won’t exist in sixteen hours, sitting on top of a monthly cluster that will. The label says one number. The meat is two clocks. If you tweet the number without the mix, you’re tweeting a blender setting.
Our hint on the tab says it in one line: select one or more expiration dates. GEX, OI, and the seven levels are the sum of those dates. That’s not fine print. That’s the definition of the chart.
“All” is still useful. It’s the full listed book in one picture. Just don’t describe it as “the” call wall as if there were only one clock. There isn’t.
How to use the expiry filter without a playbook
I don’t have a recipe. I have questions.
What magnet is in play today? Isolate 0DTE (or the nearest date). Look at the profile. That’s the same-day weather. Spot versus flip, nearest wall, shape of the pile — the same four reads as how to read a GEX chart, on a shorter clock.
What’s leftover when today dies? Turn 0DTE off. Leave weeklies and monthlies. If the cyan skyscraper collapses, the ceiling was same-day. If it stays, you still have a neighborhood after the close. That’s the most useful toggle on the tab. It is not a trade.
What does a weekly versus a monthly say? The dropdown is there. Short term, week, month — however the dates fall. One mix, one question. Don’t average them in your head on top of averaging them in the chart.
Did “all” lie in a friendly way? Flip back to all. See what the smoothie stole from the isolated view. If the gamma flip jumped two percent, you just learned that 0DTE was dragging the regime line. Worth knowing. Not a buy stop.
Then I stop. I don’t fade a 0DTE wall because a blog said same-day gamma pins. Sometimes it pins. Sometimes it gets run and the hedge feeds the run. Negative-gamma 0DTE is very good at that. Positive-gamma 0DTE is very good at looking pinned until it isn’t.
Opens and closes deserve a boring extra look. The first half hour can be a 0DTE book that isn’t fully on yet, or a leftover from Europe, or just a thin print. The last hour is when same-day gamma is most of what’s left of the day. A call wall that was a suggestion at 10:30 can be a magnet at 3:40 — or a trap, if the hedge is short gamma and feeding the poke. I don’t have a clock rule. I have “the mix changed, look again.” The delayed guest snapshot makes that last-hour story even less of a live feed. Delayed means delayed. Especially at 3:50.
Weekends wipe the same-day strip. Monday’s GEX without Friday’s 0DTE is supposed to look different. If your weekend narrative reused Friday’s 3:55 walls, you reused a corpse. Check the filter on Monday before you talk.
What 0DTE gamma is not
It is not a strategy. 0DTE iron condors, lotto calls, “fade the wall into expiry” — other people’s content. This page is a map of how same-day options show up on GEX. We don’t recap trades. We don’t publish a script.
It is not proof of retail. Institutions use same-day options. So does everyone else with a login. The bar doesn’t know.
It is not tomorrow’s levels. After the close, that strip is gone. Overnight narratives that reuse the 3:50 p.m. call wall as Monday’s resistance are fan fiction.
It is not max pain, even though both get mentioned on expiry day. Max pain is a different toy. 0DTE GEX is hedge shove today. They can sit near each other. That’s a crowded strike, not a theorem.
It is not a reason to ignore monthlies. The smoothie exists because both are on the chain. Ignoring 0DTE is the other mistake: you’ll quote a sleepy monthly put wall while the actual magnet is two strikes away and dies at the close.
How this looks on our Gamma tab
The expiry control is a dropdown, not a mystery. All, or a set of dates. The profile redraws. The seven rows redraw. The price-levels overlay uses the same mix. If you change dates and nothing in your head changes, you weren’t reading the chart. You were reading a screenshot from this morning.
Guests get a delayed snapshot. Same-day gamma moves fast. Delayed means delayed. Don’t build a story on a 15-minute-old 0DTE magnet and call it now. A free account keeps a journal and one full report. Pro is unlimited tickers, not a faster 0DTE god mode. We are not selling a same-day signal.
Single names: many won’t have a true 0DTE stack like SPY. The nearest expiry might be days away. That’s fine. The filter still matters. Nearest versus monthly is the same idea with a longer fuse.
A short way to use 0DTE and the filter without a playbook
- Isolate the nearest date. That’s today’s magnet.
- Turn it off. That’s what’s leftover.
- Compare both to “all” so you know what the smoothie mixed.
- Then stop. Same-day walls are not Monday’s lines.
If those four are boring, good. Boring is the point. You wanted a map. You got a clock on the map.
