SPX and SPY point at the same S&P 500 idea. They are not the same paper. People search “SPX vs SPY options” because the chains move together and then assignment, size, and settlement ruin the mash.
SPY is an ETF. Options are American-style. Exercise can deliver 100 shares. Pin risk is live. SPX is an index. Options are European-style and cash-settled. No shares. The in-the-money amount shows up as dollars. That’s the whole fork most traders actually needed.
This dashboard is a ticker box. Type SPY, you get the SPY chain: SPY GEX, SPY smile, SPY walls. Type SPX, you get the index chain. Related weather. Two books. If you want the live picture, open Gamma and type the one you mean. Don’t screenshot a SPY call wall and caption it SPX.
The specs that actually change the map
Settlement. SPY: physical. Short an ITM call into expiry and you can wake up short (or long) 100 shares per contract. SPX: cash. The index doesn’t have shares. The difference is why “pin” on SPY is a stock-loan and delivery story, and on SPX it is a cash mark. Max pain chatter is louder on share-settled names. Still not a law.
Exercise style. SPY can be exercised early. Dividends and deep ITM puts make that less theoretical than people wish. SPX cannot be exercised early. European. The GEX model on both is still “listed OI plus a dealer guess.” Early exercise is one more way the *guess* can be messy on SPY into an ex-div. We don’t pretend the model interviews the OCC.
Size. One SPX contract is roughly ten times the notional of one SPY contract (index level × $100 versus ETF price × 100 shares, and SPY is about 1/10 of the index). Hedging flow that matters at the *index* level often lives in SPX and in ES futures. SPY still has enormous retail and ETF-arb volume. Both can be loud. They are not 1:1 bars on a GEX chart. Translate ~10× if you must. Then read the chain you typed.
0DTE. Both list a same-day expiry every weekday now. On the index, the daily/weekly product you mean is usually SPXW — PM-settled. Classic monthly SPX is the third-Friday AM-settled contract: it stops being a “trade into Friday close” animal. If you say “SPX 0DTE” on a desk, you mean SPXW. What 0DTE is. On our tab, type the root your data vendor uses for the chain you want. Don’t assume SPX and SPXW are the same snapshot.
XSP is mini-SPX: cash, European, about SPY-sized. Thinner. We mention it so you don’t think the universe is two tickers. Liquidity is the catch.
US tax treatment is often cited (Section 1256 versus equity options). That is not advice. Ask a tax person. It does not change the GEX bars.
Two GEX maps, one index
GEX is computed from that chain’s open interest. SPY has its own call wall, put wall, gamma flip, Max OI Call / Put / C+P, Max ±Gamma, ABS GEX. SPX has another set. They can rhyme. They often don’t sit on “the same” strike after you scale by ten.
Dealers hedge SPX with futures (and sometimes SPY). They hedge SPY with shares (and sometimes futures). The *story* is the same Greek. The *plumbing* is not. A SPY pin into a round number can be ETF creation/redemption plus options. An SPX pin is a cash index. Don’t import one folklore onto the other.
0DTE hijacks both charts the same way: isolate today, turn it off, then look at all. Same-day gamma is a magnet that dies at the close. SPY 0DTE volume is huge in *contracts*. SPX 0DTE is huge in *notional*. Screenshots lie about which is “bigger” if you don’t say which units.
Smile: IV by strike, one line per expiry. SPY smirk and SPX smirk are cousins. VIX is built from SPX options, not SPY. What the VIX is. Don’t read a VIX print as “SPY IV.”
QQQ is the Nasdaq cousin, not a third S&P. IWM is small caps. Useful as a reminder that “the market” is not one chain. This article is SPX vs SPY. Stop there.
What this comparison is not
It is not a recommendation to trade either product.
It is not “SPX is smarter.” Institutional flow likes cash-settled size. Retail likes SPY’s fine strikes and tight pennies. Both sentences can be true. Neither is a setup.
It is not a GEX signal. Two maps. You still don’t fade a wall because a thread said the other ticker’s wall.
It is not tax, legal, or assignment advice. Specs exist so you don’t mix the paper. After that, the OCC and your broker’s footnotes own the night.
How this shows up on our Gamma tab
Ticker box. SPY or SPX. Expiry filter. Profile, price overlay, Volatility smile. Seven levels: tap a row. Guests: delayed. Delay on 0DTE still matters. A free account: journal, one full report. Pro: unlimited tickers. None of that merges the two chains into one “S&P GEX.”
If you only ever type SPY, you are not seeing SPX. That’s fine. Just don’t caption it as the index.
A short way to keep them straight without a playbook
- SPY = ETF, shares, American. SPX = index, cash, European.
- Size is ~10×. Don’t compare raw GEX bars as if they were the same unit.
- 0DTE on the index is usually SPXW. Type the chain you mean.
- Then stop. Read the ticker you actually loaded.
If those four are boring, good. Boring is the point. You wanted the mash. You got two maps.
