Max pain and GEX both get drawn as magnets. People screenshot them on SPY Friday and talk as if the market had a meeting. Two different calculators. Two different clocks.
Max pain asks: if this expiry settled at this strike, which price would leave option *holders* with the smallest pile of intrinsic value — the most “pain.” It’s open interest plus in-the-money math. No gamma. No dealer. No hedge.
GEX — gamma exposure — asks: how hard those same contracts shove a dealer’s hedge *as price ticks now*. Gamma, a guess that dealers sit on the other side of the crowd, a chart. Call wall, put wall, gamma flip.
They can print on the same round number. That’s a crowded strike, not a proof that “they” are pinning you. If you want the live GEX picture, open Gamma. We do not plot max pain as a trade. This page is why the two labels refuse to be the same thing.
What max pain actually is
Take every call and put still open for *one* expiry. For each candidate strike, add up how much those options would be worth intrinsically if the underlying expired there. The strike where that sum is smallest is max pain.
That’s it. No Black-Scholes required. No gamma. Far OTM junk still counts in the OI, but it doesn’t add intrinsic until it gets in the money. Deep ITM leftovers can yank the number around because they *do* have intrinsic.
The folklore is that “options sellers” or “the market makers” drag price there so holders suffer. Cute. The people who sold those options are not a hive mind with a settlement committee. Some are dealers hedging. Some are funds overwriting. Some are spreads. Max pain does not know.
What *can* pull price toward a crowded strike near expiry is boring mechanics: gamma of remaining ATM options is large, hedging flow is large, and in a positive-gamma tape that flow leans against the last tick. That story is GEX, not the max-pain formula. People glue them together because both peak near the money on Friday.
Max pain is one expiry. Mix every date and you invented a number that isn’t in the textbook. 0DTE max pain is a same-day toy. Monthly max pain is a different Friday. Don’t quote “the” max pain without the date.
We don’t show max pain on the Gamma tab. On purpose. The tab is a positioning map. Adding a third magnet with a conspiracy name would make the screenshot worse, not better. You can still *talk* about it. Just don’t confuse it with Max OI Call / Max OI Put. Those are contract counts. Max pain is a what-if on intrinsic.
What GEX actually is
You already have the pillar. Short version: listed OI, dealer-side guess, gamma math, profile by strike. ABS GEX is density without the sign. The call wall and put wall are where those piles are fattest. The gamma flip is where net GEX changes sign.
GEX cares about *now*. Vol changes gamma. Spot running changes moneyness. 0DTE can drag the whole profile and die at the close. Max pain does not care about gamma at all. A sleepy monthly put with huge OI moves max pain. It might barely show up on GEX if it’s far from spot.
That’s the GEX vs open interest split wearing a costume. Max pain is an OI costume. GEX is the shove costume.
When they agree — and when that’s a trap
Often they sit in the same neighborhood on an index Friday: max pain 650, max gamma / call wall 650, spot 649. The tweet writes itself. Pin incoming.
Agreement means the crowd and the shove and the settlement toy landed on one round number. It does not mean the close is 650. Headlines exist. Negative-gamma tapes *feed* breaks. 0DTE can yank GEX off the monthly max pain by two percent at 11 a.m. and then vanish.
When they disagree, that’s the useful day.
Max pain at 640, GEX call wall at 655, flip at 648. The settlement toy is looking at leftover OI. The hedge is looking at a different pile — often shorter-dated, closer to spot. If you only quote max pain, you’re a strike late on the thing that actually shoves. If you only quote GEX, you miss where the expiry math is pointing for *that* date. Look at both clocks. Then still don’t fade.
Deep ITM calls from last month’s rally can park max pain away from ATM GEX. That’s a museum of tickets, not a magnet for the next two hours.
The clock problem
Max pain is mostly an expiry-day (and expiry-week) conversation. Wednesday in the middle of the cycle, the number is still defined. It just doesn’t deserve a meeting. GEX is a conversation whenever the pile is dense — including a Tuesday 0DTE magnet that will not exist tomorrow.
People reuse Friday’s max pain as Monday’s target. After the expiry, that strip is gone. The number you screenshotted is a corpse. Same mistake as reusing a 0DTE call wall overnight.
OPEX week is when both clocks get noisy at once. Monthly gamma starts acting short-dated. Max pain for *that* Friday gets quoted on every show. Isolate the date on our expiry filter. Then add 0DTE. Then take it off. If max pain and GEX only agree on the smoothie view, you learned the blender setting, not the close.
Barchart-style max-pain pages refresh a number and a skew chart. Fine. That number is still one expiry. If you paste it next to our seven levels without saying the date, you compared a Friday toy to a smoothie. The disagreement you’ll screenshot is often just that.
Index Fridays are where the folklore is least insane because the chain is deep. A single-name max pain with a few thousand contracts is a spreadsheet cell. We still let you type the name. Don’t give that cell a conspiracy.
What neither number is
Neither is a pin guarantee. Pinning happens. So does a 3 p.m. smear. Positive gamma makes pin *stories* more plausible. Negative gamma makes them fail more often because the hedge is feeding the move. Still a tendency.
Neither is “smart money.” Max pain is arithmetic on listed OI. GEX is a model of that OI. Retail, overwriting, dealers — the chart does not know.
Neither is an entry. Fade max pain, fade the call wall, size it — tape donation. The chart tells you where tickets and shove sit. It does not tell you to click buy.
Max pain is not ABS GEX. ABS GEX is gamma density. Max pain is intrinsic-at-expiry density. Different units.
We are not hiding a better max pain behind Pro. Pro is unlimited tickers. If we add max pain later, it will still be a toy, labeled as one.
How this looks on our Gamma tab
You get GEX bars, OI levels, the seven rows, the expiry mix. Max OI C+P is the fattest combined contract strike — cousin of the max-pain *input*, not the max-pain *output*. People mix those. Contract count versus “which settlement hurts holders.”
Tap a row. Read the sentence. If someone in the comments posted a max-pain number from another site, ask which expiry. Then look at our mix. If they don’t match, that’s the whole article.
Guests: delayed snapshot. Fine for a weekly max-pain debate. Worse for 0DTE. A free account keeps a journal and one full report. Single names: a max-pain print on a thin chain is a few thousand contracts and a blog. Don’t read it like SPY.
A short way to use both without a playbook
- Which expiry is the max-pain number even for.
- Where GEX is loud *on the mix I’m summing*.
- Do those strikes match, or is one a museum and one a magnet.
- Then stop. A crowded Friday number is not an order.
If those four are boring, good. Boring is the point. You wanted a map. You got two clocks.
