People search gamma squeeze and land on GME screenshots. Then they open a GEX chart and treat a red bar as the same thing. It isn’t.
A gamma squeeze is an *event*: a feedback loop where hedging *buys* into a rally and the rally forces more buying. GEX is a *map*: where that hedge might be heavy, and whether the model says it leans with the move or against it. Weather versus the storm. Most negative-gamma days are just noisy Tuesdays.
If you want the live picture, open Gamma and type the ticker. This page is why “squeeze” and “GEX” keep getting mashed in the same tweet.
What a gamma squeeze actually is
Skip the Reddit lore for a second.
Someone — retail, a fund, a structured note, it does not matter — buys a lot of calls, usually short-dated, often just above the market. If dealers sold those calls, they are short the option. Short the option means short gamma in the vanilla story. To stay delta-neutral they buy the underlying. Price ticks up. Gamma is high near the money and near expiry, so delta jumps. They need *more* shares. That buying can lift price into the next strike. Loop.
That loop is the squeeze. It is not a strike on a ladder. It is not the call wall. The call wall is where call-side gamma is fattest. A squeeze is what *can* happen if the hedge is chasing a rally through that pile.
Three things have to line up, and even then it can fizzle.
A short-gamma book on the call side. If the desk is actually long those calls, the hedge sells rips. No squeeze. You never see the desk. The GEX model *guesses*. Covered-call overwriting and call-selling ETFs can flip who is wearing the gamma. Treat the guess as a guess.
A dense pile of calls near spot. Quiet open interest with no gamma is a parking lot. A fat 0DTE call cluster is a magnet. 0DTE is very good at this because gamma per contract is huge. Monthlies can squeeze too. Slower fuse.
A catalyst. Squeeze lore skips this. Negative GEX does not levitate a stock. A headline, a squeeze in a related name, a buyback, a lotto tape — something has to start the first tick. GEX describes whether the hedge *might* feed that tick. It does not start it.
When the loop dies, it dies because the options expire, someone rolls, IV explodes and new buyers stop, or the book flips sign. The unwind can be as violent as the run. That is still not a trade instruction.
IV is the quiet extra in the loop. As the rally runs, implied vol on those calls often rips too. New calls get more expensive, which can choke the next wave of buyers — or, if the tape is feral, it just means the next coupon costs more and the hedge is even jumpy. GEX uses gamma, and gamma *changes* with vol. A delayed snapshot can miss that repricing. Don’t treat a morning GEX print as the afternoon squeeze weather.
Single-name borrow and options gamma get mashed too. A stock-loan squeeze is shorts covering shares. A gamma squeeze is a dealer (in the story) covering *delta from short calls*. They can happen on the same ticker in the same week. They are still two loops. If you can’t point at a call pile, you’re probably telling the stock-loan story with a Greek glued on.
What GEX actually is
GEX stacks modeled dealer gamma by strike. Cyan +Gamma, red −Gamma, purple ABS GEX, a gamma flip where the net sign changes. How to read a GEX chart is the legend.
Negative gamma — often below the flip — means the usual hedge *leans with* the last tick: sell weakness, buy strength. That is the weather that *can* host a squeeze on the way up, and a flush on the way down. Amplification is not direction. Short gamma can melt up *or* dump. If you hear “negative GEX so it has to squeeze,” that’s a camp.
Positive gamma — often above the flip — means the hedge leans against the tick. Sticky. Range stories have a better chance. Squeezes are harder here because the absorber is selling rips. Harder is not impossible. A huge 0DTE call buy can overwhelm a monthly absorber by lunch.
GEX is delayed on our public tab. A squeeze is an intraday animal. A 15-minute-old map of a 0DTE loop is a postcard from earlier. Don’t screenshot a delayed magnet and call it now.
Why people mash them
GME made “gamma squeeze” a household phrase. Dashboards then put GEX on a chart with a call wall. The tweet writes itself: red bars, squeeze incoming.
The mash is lazy in both directions.
GEX without the event. Most days with red bars are not 2021. Indexes print negative gamma and then chop. Single names print a red skyscraper that is three thousand contracts. We still show them. Don’t import a meme onto SPY, and don’t import SPY onto a thin name.
The event without the map. “Squeeze” as a personality for any rip. A buyback rally is not dealer gamma. A short covering rally in the stock-loan sense is a different loop (that one is *delta* of shorts covering, not option gamma). Words matter. If you can’t point at a call pile and a hedge story, you’re naming a candle.
A flush is the same Greek with the sign of the *path* flipped. Short-gamma hedging sells weakness. People almost never search “gamma flush.” They search squeeze. The map does not care about the branding. If the model is short gamma, amplification is two-way. Writing “squeeze” on every red bar is how you miss the dump that uses the same weather.
Call wall as a target. Fade the wall, chase through the wall — both are how people donate money to the tape. The wall is where the hedge is densest. In a squeeze story the interesting part is whether the hedge is *buying* through it. That depends on sign, expiries, and whether the model is even right. I don’t chase a wall because a thread said GME.
Index squeeze versus a single-name circus
SPY GEX is a deep chain. 0DTE every weekday. A “squeeze” on SPY is usually just a fast negative-gamma tape with a lot of same-day calls — ugly, then gone at the close. It is not a multi-day cult. QQQ similar, a bit noisier.
NVDA, TSLA, meme leftovers: lumpy OI, headlines, sometimes no true 0DTE strip. The GEX chart can look like a squeeze textbook and then do nothing, or look quiet and then a gap does all the work before the hedge matters. Read them as different animals. The squeeze Wikipedia page is almost always a single name. Your Gamma tab will still load SPY. Don’t mix the folklore.
What neither thing is
A squeeze is not a signal. GEX is not a signal. “Buy the squeeze” is a YouTube title.
It is not max pain. Max pain is an expiry toy about which strike hurts holders. A squeeze is a path. They can rhyme on a Friday. Coincidence plus pinning chatter.
It is not proof dealers are short. The model infers from listed OI. If customers are net short calls, the loop runs backwards: hedge sells the rip. That’s why the assumption paragraph exists on every serious GEX page, including ours.
It is not tomorrow’s setup. 0DTE gamma dies at the close. Overnight narratives that reuse the 3:50 p.m. call wall as Monday’s squeeze are fan fiction. Toggle the expiry filter.
How this looks on our Gamma tab
You will not see a button labeled Squeeze. That’s on purpose. We show the map: profile, seven levels, expiries, a delayed guest snapshot.
What I look at if someone says “squeeze”:
- Spot versus the gamma flip — is the model even in a short-gamma neighborhood.
- Where the call pile is — Max +Gamma, Max OI Call, shape, not one tweeted number.
- Whether that pile is 0DTE. Isolate it. Turn it off. See what’s leftover.
- Then stop. If the tape is ripping, the map might explain *why it can keep going*. It does not tell you to click buy.
Guests get delay. A free account keeps a journal and one full report. Pro is unlimited tickers, not a squeeze siren. Single names are noisier than SPY. We still show them.
A short way to keep the two words apart
- GEX is the weather. Squeeze is a storm that sometimes uses that weather.
- Negative gamma can amplify a rally *or* a dump.
- No catalyst, no loop — just a red bar.
- Then stop. You wanted a map. You got a map, not a war story.
