The put/call ratio is puts divided by calls. That’s the whole formula. Usually volume: contracts traded today. Sometimes open interest: contracts still open. Two different clocks. People mash them, then mash the mash with VIX and call it sentiment.
A ratio above 1 means more puts than calls in whatever you counted. Below 1 means more calls. TV treats “high PCR” as fear and “low PCR” as greed. Sometimes the tape later agrees. Often it doesn’t. Puts are hedges as often as they are bets. A fund buying protection is not a YouTuber “going short.” The ratio does not interview the flow.
This site does not plot PCR. On purpose. GEX is gamma by strike — walls, flip, ABS GEX. PCR is a single fraction with no strike map. Related weather. Different instrument. If you want the live GEX picture, open Gamma. This page is why the fraction is not that chart.
Which ratio you’re actually looking at
Volume PCR resets every session. It is today’s traffic. A 0DTE day can dominate it: same-day index options are a huge slice of US volume. 0DTE PCR is not “the market’s 30-day mood.” It is who traded *today’s* lottery and hedges. Mix it with a monthly OI ratio and you’re averaging a weather vane with a climate.
OI PCR moves slow. It is the book. Closer in spirit to what feeds GEX (the open pile), still not GEX — because GEX weights by gamma, and a far OTM put with huge OI can be a parking lot. GEX vs open interest.
Equity vs index vs total. Cboe-style splits exist. Equity PCR includes stock and ETF options — SPY sits here. Index PCR is cash-settled indexes — SPX sits there. Total mixes them. A “high PCR” headline without the flavor is a vibe. SPX vs SPY is the same fork: two products, two counts.
ISEE and cousins flip the fraction or count only opening customer buys. Read the label. Invert it in your head and the story flips. We are not building a sentiment dashboard. We are telling you the fraction is not one object.
Every trade has two sides. Volume is tickets. A customer buy of puts is also a dealer (or another customer) sell of puts. The ratio does not tell you who is opening, closing, spreading, or overwriting. Unusual volume scanners have the same hole. “Smart money” is a brand. Listed prints are prints.
PCR vs VIX vs GEX vs smile
PCR counts. How many.
VIX prices. How expensive a 30-day S&P move is, from a strip of SPX options. Heavy put *volume* can print while IV stays calm. Panicked IV can print on thin volume. Both can be true. Don’t use PCR as a VIX substitute or the other way around.
Smile is IV by strike. Skew is the *price* of crash insurance. PCR is not skew. A steep put wing is not “PCR is 1.4.”
GEX is the hedge map. Cyan +Gamma, red −Gamma, call wall, put wall, gamma flip. A put-heavy day does not mean the put wall will hold. A call-heavy day does not mean a gamma squeeze. The squeeze is a loop. PCR is a fraction.
Contrarian folklore: extreme put buying, then a rally when hedges unwind. Extreme call buying, then a dump when there’s no protection. Sometimes. Also: the crash happens while PCR is already high because people *were* buying puts and they were right. Extremes are not a timer. We don’t fade PCR any more than we fade a wall.
What the put/call ratio is not
It is not a forecast. It is not “the market is bearish” as a personality. It is a count of listed puts versus listed calls in a bucket you chose.
It is not GEX, not max pain, not unusual options activity as proof of a whale. UOA is usually “volume large versus prior OI.” That’s a spotlight, not intent. Tomorrow’s OI update is the only cheap check for “did a book actually open.” Even then you don’t know the side.
It is not a trading signal. “PCR > 1.2, go long” is a tweet. Same donation as “fade the call wall.”
It is not on our Gamma tab. If a screenshot of PCR is sitting next to our profile, someone glued two sites together. Fine. Still two maps.
How this relates to the dashboard
You still read GEX the same way: spot versus flip, nearest wall, shape of the pile, which expiries you summed. How to read a GEX chart. PCR does not replace step one.
If you care about *today’s* 0DTE traffic, isolate today’s date on the tab — that’s the magnet, not a PCR. If you care about the leftover book, turn 0DTE off. The ratio on Twitter will mix both unless the author said so.
Guests: delayed GEX snapshot. Pro: unlimited tickers. Neither prints a put/call line. A free account keeps a journal and one full report.
Single names: a ticker PCR can be one whale. Index PCR is a crowd. Don’t import a Cboe total onto NVDA, or NVDA onto SPX.
A short way to remember PCR without a playbook
- Puts ÷ calls. Say whether that’s volume or OI, equity or index.
- It is a count, not a vol, not a gamma map, not a forecast.
- Hedges and bets look the same in the fraction.
- Then stop. Read GEX if you wanted strikes.
If those four are boring, good. Boring is the point. You wanted sentiment. You got a ratio.
